Social Media Week Lima, Ohio is a two-day event with today featuring conference-style speakers and panels while sessions tomorrow take the form of workshops. Facebook is giving publishers new ways to protect their content. It’s called Rights Manager and it provides protections to Facebook Live videos and videos uploaded to Facebook as well as other forms of content. QVC-style livestreams are helping US fashion boutiques reach customers in China. The interactive nature of live streaming adds a more personal touch as viewers can ask questions in the chat and receive answers from hosts. E-commerce and live streaming are enormously popular in China. The LA Times cites the Boston Consulting Group in reporting that Chinese customers in 2016 spent more money online than customers in the US and UK combined.

Musical.ly Adds Live Video Streaming Features from Live.ly (Update Ep89)

Say good-bye to live streaming app live.ly. musical.ly is killing off the app that it launched two years ago. It will incorporate the live streaming features of live.ly into the lip-syncing musical.ly app. Users of musical.ly can expect access to the live video streaming features in the next few weeks.

Instagram Takes On YouTube & Snapchat Discover with Long-Form Video (Update Ep87)

Tech Crunch is reporting that Instagram will announce the launch of a long-form video hub next week. This looks to be an attempt by Facebook to challenge both YouTube and Snapchat’s Discover feature. Instagram is planning to open the doors for creators to upload 4k, full-screen, vertical videos. Tech Crunch reports Instagram has been working to bring social media stars and content publishers onboard before the announcement on June 20th. Expect the long-form videos to have an external link-out option along with potential monetization.
